Altech Chemicals (ASX:ATC) Unveils Pilot Plant Design for Battery Anode Materials

Altech Chemicals Limited (ASX: ATC|ENG:A3Y) announced that its German subsidiary Altech Industries Germany GmbH (AIG) has finalized the preliminary design of its pilot plant which will be used in the manufacture of battery anode materials. The pilot plant will be built in Germany to use Altech’s exclusive and revolutionary Silumina anodesMT high purity alumina (HPA) coating technology.

Altech also released its business report for the quarter ended December 31, 2021. Buoyed by a quarterly business report showing significant progress, ATC gained 6.5% on the ASX to trade at AU$0.122 .

The pilot plant was designed to demonstrate Altech’s proprietary battery material coating technology and will produce up to 36,680 kg of anode material per year. AIG has exclusive production rights to Altech’s battery material coating technology with the European Union.

The pilot plant will be built in the Dock3 facility of the Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park, adjacent to the proposed site for the battery materials coating plant. The Company has leased approximately 300m2 of floor space within the Dock3 facility for setting up the pilot plant.

An on-site analytical laboratory is also planned for the pilot plant. The on-site laboratory would help provide a quick assessment of the purity of the product produced at the plant. The lab will monitor physical parameters, which can be used to quickly change process parameters and operational setpoints.

The Dock3 space has all the necessary utilities, including offices for the project and operations team.

AIG designed the plant in two distinct processing areas, namely precursor production as well as coating and calcining of battery materials. The strategy consists in operating the production of precursors in discontinuous mode, producing 10 kg per batch. The precursor production volume is sufficient to power the downstream operation of the anode material coating step for nearly 30 hours of continuous production.

Processing equipment should be manufactured using fluoropolymers and ceramic materials. This is due to the nature of the metallurgical processes of leaching and crystallization. These compounds will also help to achieve the high purity requirement of the plant product.

Altech asked its equipment suppliers to provide a full-scale design to supply the pilot plant equipment, including centrifuge, filtration and calcination. This process will evaluate the operating parameters and dimension the scaling calculations.

The purity of the end product was the main consideration for the design of the pilot plant and the selection of materials for the equipment. Altech ensured that the pilot plant could operate continuously with minimal downtime.

The output from the pilot plant will be used to confirm that the final plant will achieve consistency in producing high purity battery anode material. Pilot plant products are also intended to be used as qualification samples for any potential offtake partners and end users.
